"How Wars End" - Book Launch

As the Ukraine War continues well into its second year with no end yet in sight, the topic of how wars end continues to be one of the most important issues in global affairs.

Drawing on a very wide range of expert testimonies and practical examples, Damien Kingsbury and Richard Iron will explore how and why wars end. Using their own experiences and viewpoints – one as a professional negotiator, the other a professional soldier – they will explore how understanding why wars start is fundamental to understanding how they might end and, once started, understanding what prolongs them is critical to how to end them.

How Wars End: Theory And Practice​(Routledge, 2023) draws on the direct experience of both soldiers and academics who in each case have also been advisers on fighting and ending wars. Unlike more theoretical works, the book draws on first-hand experiences, including wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Indonesia and many others.
