The invasion of Ukraine saw an outbreak of protests in Russia and raised hopes that the Russian people might be able to stop the war. Those hopes have to date not been fulfilled. Instead, leading opposition leaders have been imprisoned or exiled.
With legitimate political opposition to Putin's rule effectively outlawed, does internal resistance to Putin's regime still matter? Who can be considered Putin's political opposition? What is the current and potential role of the leading political figures in the anti-war resistance movement?
In answering these questions, the panel will consider three main points:
1. Resistance to the Putin regime and its propaganda apparatus under the current conditions.
2. The opposition's potential role in the event of a political crisis within Putin's regime.
3. The opposition's possible contribution to the restoration of democratic institutions in the aftermath of a collapse of the Putin regime.
This discussion will set the context for A Conversation with Leonid Volkov, Alexey Navalny's Chief-of-Staffwhich will take place at AIIA Victoria on Tuesday 28 March 2023.
