Australian Institute of International Affairs Victoria

The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is an independent non-partisan, non-profit organisation devoted to the promotion and discussion of international affairs and global issues. The Institute hosts an active program of speakers throughout the year focused both on ongoing global issues, as well as current events and issues affecting the world today. Established in New South Wales in 1924, and in Victoria in 1925 as branches of London’s Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), the AIIA was created as an Australian entity in its own right in 1933, and today has branches in all states and the ACT. In Victoria, the AIIA was based since 1961 in Dyason House in East Melbourne, but in November 2023 moved to more modern premises at 356 Collins street in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. During its long history, AIIA Victoria has involved many notable authorities and leading figures within the international affairs sphere, including Sir John Latham, Sir Owen Dixon, Sir Ian Clunies Ross, Sir Robert Menzies, Professor Norman Harper and Professor William (‘Mac’) Macmahon Ball.

If you are a student or young professional in the international affairs sector, this masterclass series is for you!


The Career Fundamentals Masterclass Series is designed to equip students and young professionals with the essential skills and knowledge to excel in your career in a globalised world. Whether you're an aspiring diplomat, international business leader, humanitarian worker, or policy analyst, this series offers a transformative learning experience.


Through engaging (in-person) sessions led by renowned industry experts, participants will explore diverse topics critical to success in international affairs. From crafting a compelling professional identity to honing effective communication skills, the three masterclasses provide building blocks for a successful career in this ever-evolving sector.


Attendees will have the option to select one, two or all three sessions when completing registration.


A certificate and a complimentary 12-month extension of your AIIA Victoria Young Professionals membership will be provided upon completion of all 3 sessions.

Session 3 | Generative AI as a Tool for Global Policy Making and Analysis?
This session will consider generative AI as a tool for global policy making and analysis. The rapid adoption of AI globally presents Australian foreign policy makers with a unique opportunity to leverage the country's AI expertise to advance the national interest. However, policy practitioners must remain wary of the ethical, social, economic, and political consequences of accelerating the adoption of this transformative technology. Participants will be invited to consider and develop a policy framework designed to ensure that Australia’s foreign policy successfully balances the need to protect innovation while mitigating risks.

The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Ethics (CAIDE) facilitates cross-disciplinary research, teaching and leadership on the ethical, technical, regulatory, and legal issues relating to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies.
