Young Professionals – Gender and the Global Climate Crisis

Gender plays a significant role in how the effects of climate change are experienced. The global climate crisis disproportionately affects women and girls, exacerbating prevailing gender disparities and presenting distinct risks to their livelihoods, health and safety. As climate change drives conflict globally, women and girls face increased vulnerability to various forms of gender-based violence and exploitation, including conflict-related sexual violence, human trafficking, and child marriage.

During climate disasters, women face additional obstacles due to persistent gender inequalities in information access, mobility, decision-making, and resource access. These barriers jeopardise their livelihoods, well-being, and recovery, perpetuating vulnerability to future disasters.

Acknowledging women's multifaceted roles as decision-makers, educators, caregivers, and experts across various sectors and levels is pivotal for devising sustainable responses to climate change. Despite bearing disproportionate impacts, women play a vital role in both adapting to and mitigating climate change, offering valuable insights and practical solutions to address the climate crisis.

This conversation forum will offer key insights from experts and practitioners addressing the intersection of climate change and its disproportionate impact on women and girls.
