In February 1945, the leaders of the three allied nations (the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom) met in Yalta, Crimea to discuss the post-war future of Europe and the world. Just a few months later, the downfall of Berlin to the advancing Red Army led to the demise of the Third Reich and the subsequent end of hostilities in Europe.
Eighty years later, Europe once again faces the risk of major conflict.
At the same time, over the past four months, the world has observed a slow reanimation of strategic dialogue between the US and Russia by means both of shuttle diplomacy, and a political will in Washington and Moscow to re-engage. Despite the failure to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, the dialogue continues to evolve. So too do attempts to recalibrate US-China relations, though the current new-look dialogue appears overshadowed by the tariffs war.
With the ongoing crisis of the international system and an ongoing risk of a major war, can a New Yalta become a reality?
