India is the world's largest democracy and is one of the fastest growing major economies. Its large population, diverse economy and growth trajectory present significant trade and investment opportunities for Australia and Australian businesses. Many sectors would benefit from an increase in trade and investment with India, including agriculture, education, energy, resources, tourism and financial services.

In April this year, the Australian and Indian Governments signed an interim trade and investment agreement - the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA). The agreement is in advance of a formal Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, which will continue to be negotiated by the two Governments. The ECTA has specific commitments on certain agricultural products, including sheep meat, wool, seafood, and wine. It also provides a new framework to support the recognition of professional qualifications, and procedures for licensing and registration between professional bodies.

What impact will the ECTA have on two-way trade & investment between India and Australia? What are the challenges to negotiating the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA)? What effects will rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific have on the flow of goods, services, capital and labour? How does the ECTA seek to deepen the Australia-India strategic partnership?
